Minister MacKay Delivers Keynote 9/11 Address in Washington

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 8, 2011) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, delivered the keynote Canadian address today at a 9/11 Commemoration Summit in Washington D.C.

The Summit was the main commemoration event in the U.S. capitol, where those who tragically lost their lives nearly ten years ago, were remembered.

"This Commemoration Summit helps us remember the devastation that occurred on September 11, 2001, but it has also been an opportunity to call on people to be forward-looking, and to renew our commitment to security and resilience," said Minister MacKay. "The North American security and defence relationship has evolved since 9/11 and so have our constant efforts to broaden and deepen it. Canada and the U.S. have pledged to continue to maximize their security and defence cooperation and interoperability, enabling us to persist in effectively countering threats and growing our relationship as steadfast allies."

The Town of Gander, Newfoundland, also received an International Community Resilience Award at the gala dinner following the Summit.

"In the shadow of these devastating attacks, communities like Gander, Newfoundland came together to provide support for thousands of stranded air travelers who were diverted from U.S. airports," said Minister MacKay. "These acts of kindness and hospitality are remembered fondly by those who found themselves stranded from home."

The gala dinner was attended by members of the 9/11 Commission, 9/11 survivors, Members of Congress, and senior officials from the U.S. Administration, including Secretary Janet Napolitano from the Department of Homeland Security, who also gave an address.

The Summit was organized by the Center for National Policy, a security think tank in the U.S., the Voices of September 11th, which promotes public policy reform on preparedness and response to terrorism, and support from the Rockefeller Foundation, a U.S. philanthropic organization.
