Minister MacKay Meets Lithuanian Minister of National Defence

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 17, 2012) - Today, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, met with Lithuania's Minister of National Defence, Her Excellency Rasa Juknevičienė, to discuss next week's NATO Chicago Summit and to reaffirm Canada and Lithuania's defence relationship.

"Canada and Lithuania enjoy good defence relations. Canada was a strong supporter of Lithuania's NATO membership and remains committed to our defence relationship with Lithuania", said Minister MacKay. "We discussed the key role of the Alliance as a unique collective defence organization, and the need to ensure that NATO member countries bring the Alliance the capability and agility it needs to help us face the threats of today and of the future. Canada and Lithuania's participation in NATO operations around the world is a tangible signal of our commitment to our trans-Atlantic Alliance."

During their meeting, both ministers also had the opportunity to discuss their shared interests and perspectives on global security challenges, as well as expectations for next week's NATO Summit in Chicago.
