Minister Mackay Praises Reservists, Employers for Hurricane Igor Relief Efforts

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 6, 2010) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Cabinet Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today commended the contributions of more than 200 local Reservists and their civilian employers to Operation Lama, the Canadian Forces' relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Igor.

"I am very proud of the outstanding actions of our Reservists," said Minister MacKay. "Under Brigadier-General Stack's leadership, they demonstrated heart-felt compassion and ongoing dedication in responding to the devastation and distress experienced by so many of their neighbours. They were willing to put their own concerns aside on such short notice and I know the people of Newfoundland are very thankful for the work of all of our Canadian Forces."

The 219 Reservists from Newfoundland and Labrador include personnel from 56 Engineer Squadron, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, 37 Service Battalion, 728 Communication Squadron, HMCS Cabot, 9 Wing Air Reserve Flight Torbay, and 9 Wing Air Reserve Flight Gander.

"The Reservists' employers and educational institutions should also be recognized at this time. They are vital partners in this operation as they support the absence of their colleagues from work and school," said Minister MacKay. "I support the efforts of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council (CFLC) in highlighting civilian employer support to the Reserves."

Working with approximately 800 Regular Force members from Atlantic Canada as part of Joint Task Force Newfoundland and Labrador (JTF(NL)), the Reservists filled staff positions and performed route and site reconnaissance and assessment, logistic and administrative support, communications, bridge construction and monitoring, assistance in aid relief, access control, military transport, and site security.

JTF(NL) reports to Canada Command, which is responsible for Canadian Forces routine and contingency operations in Canada and North America. The mandate of the CFLC is to enhance the availability of Reservists for their military duties by obtaining the support and co-operation of organization leaders in Canada.
