Minister MacKay Salutes the 93rd Class of the Royal Military College of Canada

KINGSTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 17, 2012) - The Minister of National Defence, The Honourable Peter MacKay, Chancellor of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC), presented more than 300 graduating students with their Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate's degrees in Kingston today.

The graduates include commissioned officers, civilians and the Officer and Naval Cadets for whom RMCC is renowned, and who will be commissioned as officers in the Canadian Forces on Friday, May 18, 2012. Minister MacKay called on the Class of 2012 to apply what they have learned at RMCC as future leaders for Canada and the Canadian Forces (CF).

"You successfully completed one of the most demanding military education programs in the world and you made it to this ceremony today because you showed that you can lead," said Minister MacKay. "Today is your day and I am honoured to share it with you."

The Minister also presented Honorary Doctorates' to recognize the contributions of three outstanding individuals: Dr. Allan James (Jim) Barrett, former Dean of Science and former Vice-Principal of RMCC; Dr. Ronald (Ron) Graham Haycock, former Dean of Arts and former Chair of the War Studies programme at RMCC; and Juno Award winning classical composer, Mr. Marjan Mozetich.

"I congratulate our three honorary degree recipients," said Minister MacKay. "Each of these individuals has had, in their own way, a significant impact in their respective fields, and has contributed to the betterment of their communities and to their country."

For the first time this year, five senior Non Commissioned Members (NCMs) received certificates under the NCM Executive Professional Development Programme. The complexity of today's conflicts requires adaptable leaders with enhanced critical thinking abilities. The programme's aim is to academically build upon the professional and technical skill sets of Chief Petty Officers 1st Class/Chief Warrant Officers (CPO1/CWO) who have been selected to hold key positions and senior appointments in the CF.

Two days of events are being held at RMCC to celebrate the Class of 2012. Tonight, the Sunset Ceremony will be held on the RMCC Parade Square at 7 p.m. It will feature drill, the Sandhurst Military Skills Team, the RMCC bands, fireworks and much more. On Friday, May 18, 2012 at 10 a.m., the Commissioning Parade will be held on the Parade Square. Graduating cadets will be presented with their CF officers' commission.
