Minister of National Defence and Chief of the Defence Staff Attend the 2010 Manama Dialogue

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2010) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, participated in the 2010 Manama Dialogue in the Kingdom of Bahrain from December 3 to 5. Organized annually by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Manama Dialogue is viewed as the primary security forum for the Middle East and the Gulf region.

"The Manama Dialogue provides an excellent opportunity for Canada to engage its NATO allies and other partners on security challenges facing the international community," said Minister MacKay. "This event has given us a forum to discuss issues such as regional stability, counter piracy, and military cooperation. The Manama Dialogue has proven to be an optimal venue to approach these topics and examine solutions for greater security and collaboration in the area."

"The Manama Dialogue is a great occasion for me to meet my counterparts, to hear their views, and to gain a greater understanding of this region," said General Natynczyk. "It continues to be an important forum for the discussion of defence and security issues in the Middle East and Gulf."

Over the course of the Manama Dialogue, Minister MacKay had the opportunity to meet bilaterally with counterparts from several countries, including the Kingdom of Bahrain, Jordan, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the State of Qatar, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
