Minister of National Defence and Chief of the Defence Staff Visit Deployed Canadian Armed Forces Personnel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 21, 2013) - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of National Defence and General Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), concluded a week-long visit to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel deployed on Operations Attention and Artemis late last week.

The trip provided the Minister and the Chief with an opportunity to meet and thank military personnel for their commitment, hard work, and dedication on behalf of the Government of Canada. The Minister and the CDS also met defence and security partners and received updates on Canada's contributions to the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan and efforts to thwart terrorist activities in the Arabian Sea region through participation in Combined Task Force 150.

"Canadians should be proud of our servicemen and women and of Canada's role and contributions to international efforts promoting security and stability," said Minister Nicholson. "I am thankful for the opportunity to meet with members of our Armed Forces as they participate in this important NATO mission and see firsthand the significant efforts being made in Afghanistan and the Arabian Sea region."

"It was an absolute pleasure for me to meet with the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who are doing such an outstanding job representing our country abroad," said General Lawson. "I know that its hard for them to be away from their families and friends - but I know equally well that they are making a difference, and that Canadians can be proud of their efforts and achievements. They are performing their duties in the very best tradition of operational excellence that Canadians have come to expect from their deployed forces."

Operation Attention is Canada's participation in the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan, which delivers training and professional development support to the national security forces of Afghanistan: the Afghan National Army, the Afghan Air Force, and the Afghan National Police.

Canada is one of 29 nations that contribute a combination of naval subject matter experts and naval assets to Combined Maritime Forces, a naval coalition that promotes security and stability in the international waters of the Middle East. The Canadian contribution to this mission is known as Operation Artemis.
