Minister of National Defence Returns from the IX Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 23, 2010) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today congratulated his Bolivian hosts for a productive ninth biennial Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas (CDMA), which took place in Santa Cruz. This year's conference brought together defence ministers and senior officials from 30 hemispheric countries to discuss common defence and security issues.

"Together, our nations have faced challenges that reach across borders, such as organized crime, narcotics trafficking, terrorism, and natural disasters," said Minister MacKay. "This is exactly why the Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas is so important—it is the only hemispheric forum that brings defence ministers together not only to discuss common defence and security issues, but also to identify concrete solutions. I look forward to the next conference in Uruguay in 2012."

While in Santa Cruz, Minister MacKay had the opportunity to meet bilaterally with Nelson Jobim, Minister of Defence for Brazil; Jaime Ravinet, Minister of Defence for Chile; Rodrigo Rivera, Minister of Defence for Colombia; and Rubén Saavedra, Minister of Defence for Bolivia and the conference host.

Ministers at the IX CDMA worked towards a declaration aimed at further strengthening democratic civil-military relations in the hemisphere and at enhancing bilateral and regional relationships.
