Minister Nicholson and Minister MacKay Conclude the 2013 Halifax International Security Forum

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 24, 2013) - Today, the fifth annual Halifax International Security Forum concluded in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, both declared this year's event a resounding success.

"This year's Forum allowed Canada to once again advance many of our defence diplomacy objectives," said Minister Nicholson. "I had the opportunity to meet with many of my counterparts, including U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, where we discussed how we can respond to current global defence and security challenges together."

The three-day event brought together over 300 prominent defence and international security experts and practitioners from around the world to discuss ideas and share insights on important global security challenges.

"I am so pleased to see that once again we came together as a global community in Halifax, to discuss the most pressing defence and security challenges," said Minister MacKay, Minister of Justice and Regional Minister to Nova Scotia. "Crime and terrorism are global issues which require an international response. Bringing together these high-calibre, world renowned policy experts and decision makers will strengthen that response."

Topics discussed this year at the Forum included current geographic and thematic trends and issues in international security. Participants at the Halifax International Security Forum have included key defence leaders from Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, NATO, and NORAD.

"The event is recognized around the world as a unique platform for the international security community to engage on security and defence issues, influencing ideas and informing decision makers from across the globe," added Minister Nicholson. It was truly dynamic, challenging, diverse and global, and this is what makes it particularly relevant and useful. We are proud of the international prominence that the Forum has achieved since it began in 2009, right here in Halifax."

The Government of Canada is proud to support events like the Halifax International Security Forum, which provide opportunities for Canadian voices to shape discussion on international security issues and enhance Canada's profile on the world stage.
