Minister Nicholson Participates in the NATO Defence Ministerial Meeting

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM--(Marketwired - Feb. 27, 2014) - Department of National Defence


The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of National Defence, participated in a meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, which took place on February 26-27, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

  • In addition to the NATO meetings, Minister Nicholson also took the opportunity to meet one-on-one with several of his counterparts, including the New-Zealand Minister of Defence Dr. Jonathan Coleman, and the United Kingdom Secretary for Defence Philip Hammond.
  • Discussions during the Ministerial meetings focused on delivering NATO capabilities and reforms, the NATO mission in Afghanistan, and preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit, taking place on September 4-5, 2014 in Wales, UK. The last NATO summit was held in Chicago in 2012.
  • The NATO Wales Summit will be an opportunity for Heads of State and Government to provide strategic direction on Alliance activities. The Summit is expected to pay tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of NATO and Partner forces during more than a decade of operations in Afghanistan, and determine how NATO can meet future challenges.
  • Canada remains at the forefront of efforts to transform and reform the Alliance into a fit-for-purpose, political-military hub that enables Allies and non-NATO Partners to address current and future security challenges. The NATO Defence Ministerial meeting provides the necessary platform for Canada to engage in these NATO reform initiatives and confirm our support to our Allies and NATO Partners.
