Minister Nicholson Speaks at Conference on Defence and Security

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 21, 2014) - Department of National Defence

The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of National Defence, gave a key-note address at the annual Conference on Defence and Security, hosted by the Conference of Defence Associations Institute, which took place February 20-21, in Ottawa.

Quick Facts

  • Much has changed since the Canada First Defence Strategy was first published in 2008. The combat operations in Afghanistan have ended, and Canada has been faced with global economic uncertainty. Accordingly, the Government of Canada has shifted its attention and has made the economy its priority.
  • The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are working to enhance business, management and supporting processes through Defence Renewal, an effort to minimize inefficiencies and overhead, and to maximize the military's operational effectiveness. Defence Renewal will create a lean and efficient organization that can generate savings to be reinvested in military capabilities and readiness.
  • The recently announced Defence Procurement Strategy (DPS) also aims to leverage defence acquisitions to benefit the Canadian economy and growth.
  • As part of the DPS, DND will publish a Defence Acquisition Guide - which will list its key military equipment procurement intentions - to help Canadian firms to position themselves for success.

"Defence procurement continues to be - above all - about getting the right equipment, at the right time, and at the right price, to our men and women in uniform. They deserve nothing less. We are committed to early, transparent and substantive dialogue with our defence industry, because we recognize that Canadian industries are critical partners in ensuring that we provide the most innovative, cutting-edge equipment solutions to support the operational requirements of a modern, flexible military. "
