Minister of National Defence Statement on Canada Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 1, 2011) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement for Canada Day:

"On Canada Day, I extend my best wishes to all members of the Canadian Forces, civilian staff with the Department of National Defence and their families. I thank you for your dedication and commitment over the course of the past year which has enabled Canada to carry out important tasks at home and around the world.

I humbly acknowledge the incredible sacrifices and that men and women in uniform make in their duty to our country. It is an opportunity like no other, and an honour, to work side-by-side with Canadian Forces members. From providing humanitarian assistance in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, to security and logistics support for the Vancouver Olympics and the G8/G20 meetings, to flood assistance to the Provinces of Manitoba and Quebec, to our ongoing missions in Afghanistan, Libya and around the world, the soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen have done the Department, and Canada, proud.

Throughout these initiatives, the support and professionalism of departmental civilian staff has been, and continues to be, second-to-none. Indeed, civilians are a valued and integral component of Canadian Forces activities.

Take time to celebrate this great country, and be gratified by the role you have played in bringing peace, security and assistance to Canadians and people around the world.

Happy Canada Day!"
