Minister of National Defence Visits Israel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 12, 2011) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today concluded his visit to Israel as part of a five-day trip to the Middle East.

In Israel, Minister MacKay met with the Israeli Minister of Defence, Ehud Barak, where they signed a Principal Memorandum of Understanding (PMOU) between their respective defence ministries.

"Canada and Israel share a broad-based, growing relationship. Defence relations with Israel have grown significantly in recent years," said Minister MacKay. "This document will serve as the foundation for enhanced relations and lead to additional practical benefits for the Canadian Forces." 

Minister MacKay also met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Tzipi Livni, leader of the main opposition party, Kadima. He continues his visit to the Middle East by visiting the West Bank and Jordan.
