OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 8, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today issued the following statement on the occasion of World Red Cross Day and the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Red Cross. "I would like to congratulate the Canadian Red Cross on the milestone of their 100th anniversary. Throughout the past century, the Red Cross has improved the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing humanitarian efforts, both in Canada and around the world. The organization remains committed to providing protection to victims of disasters, and working for the improvement of health and the alleviation of human suffering. It is fitting that we are celebrating this anniversary during Emergency Preparedness Week, given the important role the Canadian Red Cross plays in promoting and protecting the safety of Canadians. Our Government is proud of the strong partnership we have built with the Canadian Red Cross, particularly in the area of furthering public education and outreach for emergency preparedness. We recognize the tireless efforts of the Canadian Red Cross, and we will continue to work together. On this important occasion, I invite all Canadians to join me in celebrating their 100th anniversary."
