Minister Oliver Celebrates National Tree Day in Toronto's High Park

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 25, 2013) - The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today attended a ceremony with officials from the City of Toronto to mark National Tree Day in the city's High Park.

"Canada's forests play an important role in our economy, culture, history and traditions, and Canadians can be proud of our country's record on sustainable forest management," said Minister Oliver. "I am proud to be here with the City of Toronto to celebrate National Tree Day and recognize the many ways in which trees benefit our environment and our daily lives."

Canada's forest sector is an important economic driver, providing high-paying jobs in rural communities. The forest industry contributes $19 billion to Canada's gross domestic product and directly employs 230,000 people. Since 2006, the government has invested more than $1.7 billion to support the forest industry during a period of great difficulty, and it continues to make strategic investments to support transformation.

The Government of Canada's expertise in sustainable forest management is founded on world-class science. Canada will continue to advance the understanding and practice of sustainable forest management in order to meet society's need for forest products while protecting forest health and the environmental and social value derived from Canada's forests.

Canada is also demonstrating to the world that sustainable forest management and forest sector innovation go hand in hand. By striking a balance between environmental and economic needs, the Government is ensuring that the vast natural forests in Canada will continue to play a major role in our economy, culture and traditions.
