Minister Oliver Honours Outstanding Achievement in the Canadian Energy Sector

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2011) - The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, spoke today at the Canadian Energy Person of the Year Gala hosted by the Energy Council of Canada in Calgary to honour outstanding achievement and leadership in the Canadian energy sector.

"The Canadian energy sector generates billions of dollars in economic activity and investment, creates thousands of jobs across the country, and is an essential contributor to our high standard of living," said Minister Oliver.

The Minister was honoured to attend the Gala on behalf of the Government of Canada.

This year's recipient of the Canadian Energy Person of the Year Award is Rick George, President and CEO of Suncor Energy. "Mr. George has made a remarkable contribution to his company, his community and his country," the Minister noted.

He added that, "since its inception, the Energy Council of Canada has promoted Canada's role as a major player in the world energy market. This role is very important as we continue to look toward expanding markets for our abundant energy resources and strive to become a safe and reliable global energy leader, creating more jobs and more prosperity for Canadians."

While speaking of the importance of growing international markets, the Minister continued to highlight the Government's strong support for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, noting that "the Government of Canada believes the project can be an important component in growing the Canadian economy and ensuring continental energy security."

The Canadian Energy Person of the Year Gala is hosted every year by the Canadian Energy Council to celebrate outstanding achievement in the Canadian energy sector and raise the profile of the Canadian energy sector in Canada and abroad.


Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver spoke to business leaders at the Canadian Energy Person of the Year Gala hosted by the Energy Council of Canada in Calgary. He highlighted the importance of Canada's energy sector to the economy and congratulated the sector for its remarkable achievements and its contribution to Canada's economy and to the quality of life of Canadians.
