Minister Oliver Touts Canada's Energy Resources and Economic Strengths

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 23, 2011) - The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, spoke today to business leaders, decision makers and interested citizens at the Canadian Club in Toronto. Minister Oliver highlighted his recent trips across Canada and the U.S. — most recently to California, where he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transportation and Energy Ministerial Conference — where his message has been clear: Canada is a global energy superpower that can supply energy to its customers in a way that is safe, reliable and environmentally responsible.

"With the global economy still fragile, Canadians gave us a strong mandate to implement our low-tax plan to create jobs and economic growth — a plan that is working," said Minister Oliver.

"For Canadians, there is an additional dimension to the energy discussion," the Minister added. "Investments in our energy future are absolutely essential to realizing economic opportunities, creating jobs and building on our unique Canadian advantage."

The Minister emphasized the vital role the energy industry — and, in particular, the oil sands — plays in Canada's economy, accounting for 7 percent of the gross domestic product and for hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the country.

"According to the Canadian Energy Research Institute, over the next 25 years, oil sands development is expected to inject over $2.3 trillion into Canada's economy," said Minister Oliver. "While we continue to reap the economic benefits of this resource, we must be mindful of striking the right balance for sustainable development."

Minister Oliver also took the opportunity to reiterate the government's strong support for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, noting that "the Government of Canada believes the project is an important plank in building continental energy security."

The Minister highlighted how ongoing Government of Canada investment in the clean energy industry is not only creating jobs and fostering innovation but also positioning Canada as a global leader in the new economy.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver spoke to business leaders and decision makers at the Canadian Club in Toronto. He highlighted the importance of Canada's energy resources to the economy, the government's support for clean energy technologies, the role of the oil sands in ensuring energy security, and opening up new trade and investment opportunities that will benefit Canadian companies and communities. The Minister also spoke of the Government of Canada's strong support for the Keystone XL pipeline.
