Minister of Public Safety is Pleased that the Federal Court Validated the Security Certificate Issued Against the Foreign National Alleging to be Paul William Hampel

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 4, 2006) - Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day, issued the following statement in response to the news that the Security Certificate issued under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act against the foreign national alleging to be Paul William Hampel has been validated by the Federal Court. The deportation action against this individual can now take place:

"Canada's doors are not open to those who threaten the security of Canada. As the outcome of today's Federal Court proceedings demonstrates, this certificate was warranted. This is an example of how the security certificate process can and should work. The Government is pleased with this result. The individual will remain in detention until his deportation.

I want to commend the work of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in this complex case and recognize the support provided by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). This is a testament to the excellent cooperation between our security agencies as they work together to safeguard our nation's security.

Our new government is committed to working with all our partners to help ensure the safety of all Canadians."
