Minister Raitt Applauds New Agreement Between the Port of Saint John Employers Association and the International Longshoremen's Association

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Labour, congratulated the Port of Saint John Employers Association and the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), Local 273, for successfully reaching a new collective agreement which will ensure long -term stability for all parties.

"I applaud the Port of Saint John Employers Association and the ILA, Local 273 for ratifying a new agreement without interruption to services. Our economy remains fragile and its long -term stability depends on the productivity of our industries," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations contribute to our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians."

The collective agreement, covering a unit of 61 longshoremen, 11 checkers and 5 shipliners, expired on December 31, 2010. The dispute was settled with the assistance of conciliators from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code. Mediation aims to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
