Minister Raitt Applauds New Agreement Between Shaw Media and the CEP

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 23, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated Shaw Media and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) – Eastern Bargaining Unit for successfully reaching a new collective agreement.

"I am very pleased that Shaw Media and CEP – Eastern Bargaining Unit have reached a negotiated agreement without interruption to services," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations benefit our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians."

The CEP – Eastern Bargaining Unit was merged from six units covering nearly 250 employees. The six collective agreements expired on several dates, ranging from October 31, 2004 to December 31, 2007. The dispute was settled with the assistance of conciliation officers from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code. Mediation aims to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
