OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 27, 2014) - Natural Resources Canada
The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today addressed the Canadian Hydropower Association Forum 2014, where she emphasized the importance of the hydropower industry to Canada's economic prosperity.
During her speech, Minister Rempel stressed the significance of hydropower as a source of clean energy. The Minister recognized hydropower as a leading source of electricity in Canada, creating jobs, growth and prosperity for all Canadians. She also underscored that responsible resource development is a top priority for the Government of Canada.
Citing the Lower Churchill Projects and other developments underway as examples, Minister Rempel noted that the hydropower industry will continue to thrive and provide Canada with clean, sustainable energy. The Minister encouraged members of the industry to capitalize on the increasing global potential of this sector to create jobs and export Canada's know-how, expertise, products and technologies to other countries.
- Canada has one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world and is the world's third-largest producer of hydroelectricity.
- Over three-quarters of Canada's power comes from emission-free sources - about 60 percent from hydropower, 14 percent from nuclear energy and about three percent from non-hydro renewable energies - for a total of approximately 77 percent.
- Canada has strengthened its position as a world leader in clean electricity generation by becoming the first major coal user to ban construction of traditional coal-fired electricity generation units.
"Canadian hydropower is the largest source of clean and renewable power in North America, contributing over 60% of Canada's electricity production and creating jobs and economic growth. Our Government recognizes the valuable contributions the hydropower industry makes to the lives and livelihoods of Canadians."
