Minister Ritz Announces the Reappointment of the Chairperson of the Farm Products Council of Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 8, 2013) - Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today announced the reappointment of Laurent Pellerin as Chairperson of the Farm Products Council of Canada (FPCC).

"I am pleased that Mr. Pellerin has accepted this reappointment to the Council", said Minister Ritz. "During the past four years, Mr. Pellerin has demonstrated his leadership and understanding of the system and has shown that he is dedicated to seeing Canadian farmers and producers succeed."

The Farm Products Council of Canada works on behalf of the Government of Canada to help ensure all Canadians have affordable and continuous access to the foods they need while maintaining fair market prices for farmers. FPCC's specific role is to provide oversight of the national supply management agencies for poultry and eggs, as well as to supervise national promotion-research agencies for farm products. FPCC is responsible for administering two federal laws, the Farm Products Agencies Act (FPAA) and the Agricultural Products Marketing Act (APMA).

Mr. Pellerin's reappointment is for a three-year term and is effective May 31, 2014

Biographical Note

Laurent Pellerin

A resident of Bécancour, Québec, Laurent Pellerin has owned a hog and cereal farm since 1972. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a Canadian farm leader. In 2009, he held the position of President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the country's largest producer group. For 14 years, Mr. Pellerin served as President of the Union des producteurs agricoles, the organization that represents all of Québec's farmers. For eight years, he was President of the Fédération des producteurs de porcs du Québec. Mr. Pellerin was also the founding Chairperson of the Board of Directors of La Financière agricole du Québec. Internationally, he has served as President of Agricord, a Belgium-based network of non-governmental agricultural organizations focusing on international development, as well as on the executive of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers. In 2005, he was awarded the title of Chevalier of the Ordre National du Québec in recognition of his contributions to agriculture in the province. Mr. Pellerin holds a Bachelor's degree (Hons.) in group education from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.
