Minister Shea Dedicates the New Hovercraft ACV Mamilossa

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 30, 2009) - Today in Trois-Rivieres, the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, proudly dedicated ACV Mamilossa, the Canadian Coast Guard's new air-cushion vehicle.

ACV Mamilossa is a heavy-duty, powerful amphibious vehicle that will be used for icebreaking in rivers and in areas where conventional icebreakers have difficulty gaining access. It will therefore play a key role in flood prevention in Eastern Canada.

The new hovercraft will be used as navigational aids tender for the placement, maintenance and removal of buoys as well as to carry out navigational aid construction and maintenance work. It will also be used regularly in search and rescue missions.

"Because of its considerable versatility, ACV Mamilossa will help increase marine safety for Canadians and position the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) as an international leader in icebreaking, buoy tending and environmental and search and rescue activities," Minister Shea stated.

ACV Mamilossa, whose name in the Abenaki language means "he who walks from the shore onto the water", is based in Trois-Rivieres and, like all CCG units, can be quickly deployed throughout the Quebec Region.

ACV Mamilossa's technical specifications can be obtained at: www.marinfo.gc.ca/en/flotte/mamilossa.asp
