Minister Shea to lead the Canadian Delegation at 2014 Seafood Expo North America

This year's exhibit provides another welcome opportunity to highlight Canadian seafood as some of best and most sustainable in the world

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS--(Marketwired - March 14, 2014) - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, is proud to lead a delegation of Canadian fisheries and aquaculture representatives and industry members. Fish and seafood is one of the largest single food commodities exported by Canada.

Seafood Expo North America, previously known as the International Boston Seafood Show, is this continent's largest seafood trade event, drawing an estimated 19,000 buyers and sellers from more than 100 countries, including businesses across Canada.

Consumers can be confident that Canada has a robust fisheries and aquaculture management system to ensure sustainable seafood today and well into the future, making Canadian seafood a very responsible as well as delicious choice. Seafood Expo North America is therefore a great forum to further highlight our very responsible practices, build on our positive reputation and reach new markets.

Quick Facts

  • Approximately 85% of all fish and seafood landed by Canadian harvesters is exported.
  • Canada's five most valuable export species are lobster, snow/queen crab, farmed Atlantic salmon, shrimp and scallop.
  • Canada's aquaculture industry is increasingly important to our economy, now contributing more than $2 billion in total economic activity.

"Canada's fish and seafood products are among the best in the world. The sector employs approximately 80,000 Canadians in commercial fishing, aquaculture and processing activities. Our Government values our fisheries and we're committed to helping them become even more prosperous in the future. That is why I am proud to lead the Canadian delegation at the 2014 Seafood Expo North America and help our companies to open new markets around the globe."
