Minister of State Bernier Celebrates Edmonton Entrepreneurs During Small Business Week

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Oct. 24, 2013) - The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) (Agriculture), today delivered a keynote address to the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce at its Ignition Award luncheon held during Small Business Week. The Minister of State outlined how the Harper Government is empowering Canada's small business entrepreneurs to grow their businesses.

"Small Business Week is all about celebrating entrepreneurs. Through Economic Action Plan 2013, our government is putting the right conditions in place for small businesses to succeed in Edmonton and across the country," said Minister of State Bernier. "Our low-tax plan for jobs and growth is positioning Canadian small businesses to create jobs and wealth."

Economic Action Plan 2013, while focused on returning to balanced budgets, is delivering for small business entrepreneurs by keeping taxes low. Furthermore, it extends and expands the Hiring Credit for Small Business, a tax credit of up to $1,000 per year against a small business's increase in EI premiums in 2013 as a result of hiring new workers. Economic Action Plan 2013 also increases the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption to $800,000 from $750,000, allowing small business entrepreneurs to keep more of the money earned over a lifetime. The Minister of State also highlighted the Red Tape Reduction Action Plan, which reduces barriers to doing business while making the regulatory process easier and more predictable.

"Our government is empowering Canada's entrepreneurs," said Minister of State Bernier. "We are focusing on the drivers of growth and job creation, cutting red tape, reducing the administrative burden on businesses, and encouraging private sector job growth."

In Canada, small businesses represent 98 percent of all businesses, account for nearly 7 in 10 jobs in the private sector and contribute about 40 percent to the GDP, proving to be important economic drivers and sources of job creation.
