Minister of State Bernier Highlights Canada's Success at Annual Tourism Industry Conference

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 23, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), highlighted Canada's recent tourism successes at the Tourism Industry Association of Canada's Hall of Fame luncheon.

"Canada is well positioned to compete internationally and continues to gain recognition as a premier tourist destination," said Minister of State Bernier. "The recently launched Federal Tourism Strategy outlines how our government is working to be an effective partner with industry to strengthen Canada's position on the world stage, creating jobs and economic growth in every region across the country."

Canada has gained global recognition in recent weeks. It was ranked as the most powerful country brand in the world for a second consecutive year in FutureBrand's Country Brand Index. In addition, Atlantic Canada's Bay of Fundy was named a top destination for 2012 by Frommer's international travel guide and was a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition.

In his address, Minister of State Bernier noted the industry's contribution to the Federal Tourism Strategy as well as a number of initiatives that are already underway. For example, the Canadian Tourism Commission has launched its newly expanded Signature Experiences Collection, which is designed to help build the Canadian brand internationally. And, as part of another initiative, Minister of State Bernier recently travelled to China and South Korea to solidify Canada's ties with these countries and to help our tourism sector take advantage of business opportunities in priority international markets.

Minister of State Bernier encouraged Canada's tourism sector to take advantage of this success and to continue to enhance visitor experiences through exceptional service and tourism offerings.

"Our government is pleased to celebrate the tourism industry's tremendous success in 2011," said Minister of State Bernier. "Congratulations to this year's Hall of Fame inductees, who provide us with a blueprint for sustaining our momentum into 2012 and beyond."

The Canadian Tourism Hall of Fame publicly recognizes individuals whose actions and accomplishments have positively impacted the tourism sector.
