Minister of State Lynne Yelich Outlines Federal Commitment to Western Canada's Aerospace and Defence Sector

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, provided remarks today at the second annual Alberta Defence Industries Symposium and outlined the Government of Canada's continued commitment in fostering the growth of Western Canada's aerospace and defence sectors.

"Our Government recognizes the important role of Western Canada's aerospace and defence sectors in diversifying our economy and generating high-value jobs in our communities," said Minister Yelich.

Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is supporting a panel discussion at the symposium that will focus on opportunities and challenges related to the Government of Canada's Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) policy. The discussion is expected to help raise awareness of Canada's IRB policy and the benefits for small- and medium-sized businesses in Western Canada, as well as feature insights and perspectives from industry and government representatives.

"We are committed to facilitating new opportunities throughout the West by identifying key procurement opportunities and fostering connections with global firms," added Minister Yelich.

Since 2006, WD has contributed more than $37 million towards supporting Western Canada's aerospace and defence industries. This includes initiatives to improve productivity and innovation, as well as develop aerospace technology and equipment. To help promote western Canada's expertise and capabilities in this sector, Minister Yelich led a WD delegation to last month's Paris Air Show.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
