Minister of State Rickford in Atlantic Canada to Talk Innovation With Business and Academic Leaders

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 26, 2013) - The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology), will kick off a three-day visit to Atlantic Canada Tuesday, his first in his capacity as Minister of State. He will make announcements about innovative local businesses and host a round table of academic leaders in Moncton and a similar gathering of business leaders in Fredericton.

"Science and technology provide a foundation for productivity, competitiveness and growth in all our communities," said Minister of State Rickford. "As such, our government is putting in place the conditions to equip Canadians to fully participate and prosper in an ever-changing economy."

While visiting Atlantic Canada, the Minister of State will reach out to the science and technology community to hear how the government can continue to support science, technology and innovation and can help small and medium-sized enterprises become more innovative and productive in today's economy.

"Our government understands that investing in research strengthens the economy, enhances Canada's competitiveness and improves the quality of life of Canadians," he said. "This is why Economic Action Plan 2013 is providing resources to support and leverage private sector investments, to build and strengthen Canada's research advantage, and to continue to create jobs and ensure the long-term prosperity of our communities."

Minister of State Rickford became the government's representative for science and technology when he was appointed to Cabinet in July.
