Minister of State Rob Moore Highlights 10th Anniversary of World Pond Hockey Championships

PLASTER ROCK, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Feb. 12, 2011) - Today, the Honourable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) went into the corners in support of Canadian tourism at the 10th Annual World Pond Hockey Championships in New Brunswick. The annual tournament, which is delivering a boost to the local economy, includes teams from every province and territory in Canada, 35 U.S. states and a total of 15 countries worldwide.

"This annual event brings hockey enthusiasts from around the world right here to New Brunswick," said Minister Moore, who played on one of the 130 teams participating in the event. "Experiences like this help highlight all that Canada has to offer while showcasing our heritage and pride in this great Canadian game. I am pleased to take part in these festivities and promote one of New Brunswick's premiere attractions."

The tournament allows visitors from across the country and around the world to experience one of Canada's favourite pastimes, while also delivering significant economic benefits to local businesses. Tournament officials calculated the event delivered more than $3 million in economic benefits to the community in 2010. In addition, since its inception 10 years ago, the tournament has raised close to $500,000 in support of an arena facility for the Plaster Rock and Tobique Valley region, which welcomes thousands of outdoor adventure tourists each year.

The participants brave the February weather for games located on side-by-side outdoor rinks. Members of each team will also have the opportunity to sign a Canadian flag that will be sent to troops serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

"The energy this event creates rivals that of professional sports," said Minister of State Moore. "I am thrilled to take part in something that brings people together from around the globe. It is my pleasure to share this excitement with those who are serving abroad."
