Minister Toews Re-Extends Mandate of Reform Implementation Council; Welcomes Recent Progress Noted in Fourth Report

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 26, 2010) - Today the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, announced the re-extension of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council (RIC) for nine months, and welcomed the most recent progress noted in its fourth report. The Reform Implementation Council will continue to play an important role in the Government's efforts to help make the RCMP a stronger, more effective organization.

"Our government created this external advisory body to help strengthen and modernize our national police force. Today we are pleased to re-extend the Reform Implementation Council's mandate so it can continue this important work," said Minister Toews. "This fourth report focused on governance and accountability, leadership, human and financial resources, communication and sustaining change. I am pleased to say the Reform Implementation Council notes progress has been made in these key areas, but more work needs to be done."

"The RCMP welcomes this report and thanks the Council for their commitment and assistance in support of the RCMP's ongoing transformation initiatives. Employees across the RCMP remain committed to a continuing process of renewal and improvement." said RCMP Commissioner William Elliott.

The Council's fourth report applauds key progress made with the RCMP on modernization initiatives, most notability in the areas of human resources management, and notes that the process for reshaping the RCMP is well underway.

The Reform Implementation Council's mandate has been extended until December 17, 2010.
