Minister Toews Welcomes Interim RCMP External Investigations Policy

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 4, 2010) - The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, today made the following statement in response to the announcement by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of an interim External Investigation or Review Policy, effective immediately.

"I am pleased the RCMP has announced this interim policy to ensure independent investigation of incidents. Our government's position continues to be that effective review should be external to the force," said Minister Toews. "This announcement demonstrates the RCMP's commitment to becoming a stronger, more accountable and modern organization. We support the RCMP as it moves toward formalizing this policy, and makes further progress on its transformation agenda. This Government will continue its work on measures to reform and strengthen our national police force."
