Minister Tony Clement Announces Funding for Monument in Parry Sound

PARRY SOUND, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 3, 2012) - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, today announced a contribution of up to $13,360 to restore a monument honouring Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour our Veterans and the brave service men and women who serve Canada so selflessly," said Minister Blaney. "Restoring war memorials can inspire a renewed sense of remembrance in a community. This is why our Government is proud to support projects that help honour the sacrifices of our Veterans and our service men and women."

"I applaud the Town of Parry Sound for their efforts and dedication to improving this place of remembrance," said Minister Clement. "Supporting communities in restoring local memorials is one way our Government is helping to ensure Canadians of all ages learn about those who fought for the peace and freedom we enjoy today."

The Town of Parry Sound will erect a granite monument to replace a small plaque that presently sits on a parcel of land along the Parry Sound Fitness Trail. It will bear the names of 342 soldiers who contributed to the Algonquin Regiment and who gave their lives while serving in the Second World War. The structure is a focal point in the community and is used for remembrance activities.

Funding for this initiative is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, our Government works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation's heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.

Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a quarterly basis. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. For more information, please visit veterans.gc.ca.
