Minister Van Loan Applauds Collaborative Law Enforcement Efforts That Result in Multiple Arrests in "Operation Axe"

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 13, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement regarding a three-year drug investigation involving various police in the Montreal area, resulting in the arrest of 47 people so far.

"I want to commend the numerous police forces involved in this lengthy investigation of alleged biker and street gangs. Over 700 police officers from various agencies are carrying out arrest warrants in a united effort to thwart organized crime and the illegal drug trade.

By working together, law enforcement agencies are getting criminals off our streets and are keeping our communities safe. These arrests would not have been possible without the dedication and diligence of police officers, who work tirelessly to protect our neighbourhoods from criminal elements.

This particular operation has already resulted in the seizure of firearms, cash, computer equipment and illegal drugs. This Government's National Anti-Drug Strategy is a reflection of our commitment to ensure the safety and security of Canadians. We have invested approximately $102 million over five years to support law enforcement in combating the production and distribution of illicit drugs."
