Minister Van Loan Comments on the Arrest of M. Thomas Qualls by the Canada Border Services Agency

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 18, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today issued the following statement regarding the arrest by the Canada Border Services Agency of M. Thomas Qualls, a wanted fugitive from the United States.

"I would like to congratulate the Canada Border Services Agency, which was able to successfully apprehend this wanted international fugitive. Mr. Qualls, an American citizen, fled the United States, where he was found guilty of wire fraud, mail fraud and obstruction of justice. Mr. Qualls allegedly earned up to $4 million dollars through fraudulent activities

I am currently meeting with representatives of the U.S government in Washington, D.C., to discuss ways that our two countries can work together to strengthen the management of our shared border. The arrest of Mr. Qualls provides yet another example of how law enforcement partners in Canada and United States can work together to preserve the integrity of our border and protect our citizens from criminals.

Our government remains committed to tackling crime in all forms, including fraud and white collar crime, and we will continue our work to ensure that law enforcement has the tools and resources necessary to keep our families and communities safe."
