Minister Van Loan to Discuss Security and Policing Issues Suring Visit to the United Kingdom

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 15, 2009) - The Hon. Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today announced details of his upcoming visit to the United Kingdom from May 15 - 20, during which he will hold a series of meetings with members of the British government, including the Rt. Hon. Jacqui Smith, Home Secretary and other officials.

Minister Van Loan, along with RCMP Commissioner William Elliott, will also participate in the presentation of Police Service Horse (PSH) George to Her Majesty The Queen on Saturday, May 16.

"This visit is an opportunity to continue building the longstanding and very special relationship Canada shares with the United Kingdom. I look forward to meeting with British officials and exchanging best practices on how to tackle important public safety matters of mutual interest, including fighting crime, countering terrorism and other national security issues," said Minister Van Loan.

During his visit, Minister Van Loan will meet with the Home Secretary, other members of government, policing and prison officials and others, including:

- Minister of State for Justice, the Rt. Hon. David Hanson;

- Minister of State for Borders and Immigration, Mr. Phil Woolas; and

- Minister of State for Digital Engagement and Civil Service Issues, Mr. Tom Watson.

Minister Van Loan's visit will also include a tour of the central London correctional facility Wormwood Scrubs. He will also visit the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and tour the Joint Border Operations Centre.
