Minister Van Loan Releases Second Report of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 31, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today released the second report of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council.

"The Government of Canada is satisfied with the work of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council in helping to ensure that our national police force becomes a stronger, more modern organization," said Minister Van Loan. "We can report that major progress has been made on matters including RCMP governance and oversight."

The implementation council reports that "work on the RCMP leadership initiatives is progressing well. We also consider that senior management of the RCMP has demonstrated its commitment to providing strong leadership to the reform process, thereby advancing the work of making real changes in RCMP culture."

"I am encouraged by the Council's positive assessment of the progress being made and I look forward to their further work in helping to strengthen the RCMP," said Minister Van Loan.

RCMP Commissioner William J.S. Elliott also expressed his support for the work of the Council.

"The RCMP has benefitted from the varied backgrounds and expertise of the Council members. We look forward to ongoing collaboration as the RCMP continues to implement meaningful change," said RCMP Commissioner William Elliott.
