Minister Van Loan Speaks With RCMP Sergeant Injured in Afghanistan

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 18, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement after speaking to Sergeant Brian Kelly of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who was injured following the detonation of an explosive device outside of the NATO International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 15, 2009:

"I spoke today with Sgt. Kelly by telephone. I offered him best wishes for a speedy recovery on behalf of myself and all Canadians. I thanked him for the good work he has done for his country.

Sgt. Kelly was in excellent spirits despite the incident he recently endured as a result of the insurgents' cowardly and despicable act. I was greatly impressed by his desire and interest in getting back to work as soon as he can.

I am proud of the work that Sgt. Kelly and his colleagues are doing in Afghanistan to build a credible, professional Afghan National Police force.

"Their commitment to this cause is one of the many vital roles Canadians are playing as part of our country's objective of building a stable and secure Afghanistan based on the fundamental values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law."
