Minister Van Loan Welcomes Most Recent Progress Noted by the RCMP Reform Implementation Council

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 23, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety, today released the third report of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council, as part of the Government's continuing efforts to help make the RCMP a stronger, more effective organization.

"We created this external advisory body to help bring about important changes to strengthen our national police force," said Minister Van Loan. "This third report focused on the challenges of human resources, leadership and communication and I am pleased to say that progress has been made in these three areas, but more work needs to be done."

The Council's third report indicates that progress has been made, particularly in the area of human resources management. The process to renew the RCMP's approach to leadership is also headed in the right direction, according to the Council, which expects to see concrete results from the RCMP's efforts to redefine leadership and deliver a strengthened vision throughout the force over the next six months. The Council also points out that a key remaining challenge for the RCMP is the adoption of a more transparent and proactive approach to communication with both the public and employees

Further progress made by the RCMP in these areas, as well as a review of the other elements of the broader RCMP transformation agenda is expected to be discussed in the Reform Implementation Council's next report to the Minister. This report is scheduled for March 2010.

"The RCMP appreciates the work of the Council and is pleased with the progress that has been made as we work towards strengthening our organization," said RCMP Commissioner William Elliott.
