OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 12, 2007) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced the appointment of one new member to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board and the permanent appointment of six Board members currently serving temporary terms.

Roger B. Langille of Charlottetown, P.E.I. has been appointed to the Board for a three-year term.

Edward (Ted) Giraldeau, of St. Albert, AB, Harold Leduc of Victoria, B.C., John Morrison of Toronto, ON, Ellen Riley of North Vancouver, B.C., Joan Walsh of Watervale, P.E.I. and William (Rick) Watson of Delta, B.C. are appointed to new five-year terms.

"With these seven appointments, we are again delivering on our promise to strengthen the Veterans Review and Appeal Board on behalf of the Veterans and other Canadians who rely on it for fair and just decisions," said Minister Greg Thompson. "The seven individuals named today have the expertise and experience to serve our Veterans with the respect and care they deserve."

The Veterans Review and Appeal Board handles the reviews and appeals of disability pension and award decisions for Veterans, Canadian Forces personnel, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and certain civilians and/or their dependants. It also deals with the final appeal on War Veterans Allowance decisions made by Veterans Affairs Canada.

Mr. Langille comes to the Board after a distinguished legal career as both a lawyer and Crown prosecutor.

The other six appointees have already been with the Board for between 11 months and two years.

All of the appointments were made through a new open and transparent hiring process that includes rigorous testing and screening to ensure only the most qualified candidates are appointed.

Created in 1995, the Veterans Review and Appeal Board is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that reports directly to Parliament through the Minister of Veterans Affairs. There are now 30 full-time members on the Board, including the Chair and Deputy Chair.
