Minister of Veterans Affairs Honours Exceptional Canadians From the Lower Mainland of British Columbia

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 10, 2010) - Twelve citizens from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia were honoured today for their commitment and dedication to Veterans. John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country, representing the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), decorated these individuals with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation during a ceremony in Vancouver.

"While many might be quick to speak about the importance of volunteerism, the individuals being commended today have made it their reality," said Minister Blackburn. "This is truly what makes them special... their willingness to act and help."

Mr. Weston presented the Commendation to the following individuals:

Scott Browning, Vancouver Grant McAvoy, Mission
Jeff Davis, Maple Ridge Harry Moon, Burnaby
Kathy Ensor, Port Coquitlam Robert Provost, Chilliwack
Vince Hands, Maple Ridge Bryan Quinlan, West Vancouver
Jim Harris, Chilliwack Brian Seward, North Vancouver
James Lobe', Chilliwack Robert Siddons, Coquitlam

"These are truly exceptional individuals and I am so honoured to be in their presence today," stated Mr. Weston. "They are an inspiration to us all."

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation includes a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a Veteran's blazer, as well as a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.

The Commendation is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifice and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.

More information on the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, including the accomplishments and biographies of the twelve recipients, can be found on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site at www.vac-acc.gc.ca.
