Minister Wilson-Raybould Appoints Deputy Judges to the Territories


OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 23, 2016) - The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, is pleased to announce the appointment of 22 Deputy Judges to the the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, the Supreme Court of Yukon, and the Nunavut Court of Justice,.

‎These appointees are all jurists of the highest caliber from diverse backgrounds across the country. Together, they will help our Territories continue their long history of judicial excellence while the Northern Judicial Advisory Committees are reconstituted.

  • Sitting, supernumerary or retired Superior Court Judges, as well as lawyers with more than ten years of experience, can be appointed as Deputy Judges to the Nunavut Court of Justice, the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories and the Supreme Court of Yukon Supreme Court.
  • A Deputy Judge, while in office, has and may exercise and perform all the powers, duties and functions of a judge of that court and any reference to a judge of the court of justice is deemed to include a reference to the Deputy Judge.
  • The Senior Justices of the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut can ask the Minister of Justice to appoint Deputy Judges to their courts.
  • Deputy Judges sit in circuit and can provide whatever support the territorial Superior Courts require.
