Minister Yelich Supports Western Canadian Companies at International Paris Air Show

PARIS, FRANCE--(Marketwire - June 20, 2011) - The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, is attending the International Paris Air Show this week to demonstrate the Government of Canada's continued support for Western Canada's aerospace sector.

"The International Paris Air Show is an excellent venue to promote Western Canada's vibrant and growing aerospace sector," said Minister Yelich. "Our Government is proud to support this sector, which continues to excel in research and development, technology and innovation on the world stage."

The Minister will meet with multinational companies that have significant business interests in Canada. As an important element of Western Economic Diversification Canada's (WD) economic diversification efforts is to promote and connect western Canadian industry to international aerospace and defence contractors with Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) opportunities.

The western Canadian aerospace and defence industry is a competitive, vibrant and growing sector that supports the employment of about 27,000 people, generates over $4.5 billion in annual revenues and contributes more than $2.5 billion to Canada's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Since 2006, WD has contributed over $37 million to help the western Canadian aerospace industry improve productivity and innovation, and to develop safer aerospace technology and equipment.

The International Paris Air Show is one of the world's largest tradeshows for aerospace equipment and technology. Organizers expect a total of 2,000 international exhibitors from 46 countries displaying their products and services for 138,000 trade visitors and 193,000 public visitors. There will be 205 official delegations from 88 countries from all over the world.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
