Minnesota Trade Office Teaches China Business Strategy and Culture

China Strategy Consultant and Author Kent Kedl Will Discuss Developing a China Strategy

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 20, 2007 -- The Minnesota Trade Office is hosting a day-long course for executives called "China and the WTO: Five Years On." The seminar will include a series of sessions on China strategy and business culture.

Kent Kedl, general manager of China strategy consultancy Technomic Asia and co-author of the business strategy book "The China Ready Company," will give a presentation titled "Establishing a China Strategy: Succeeding Where Others Have Failed." Kedl, a Minnesota native and the manager of Technomic Asia's Shanghai office, will draw on his experience in developing China strategies for large multinational companies such as 3M, General Motors and Dupont, as well as many small- and mid-sized companies. His presentation is built around what he calls the "six steps to building a China strategy":

-- Identify your "readiness" for China
-- Find your addressable market
-- Identify competitive positioning
-- Identify where you will play in the value chain
-- Decide which assets to localize
-- Decide on an entry structure: build it or buy it

"China is one of Minnesota's top export destinations, and there is a huge interest from the state's businesses in finding an answer to 'the China question,'" said Tony Lorusso, director of the Minnesota Trade Office. "Our job is to help companies capitalize on the profit potential in China's vast and growing marketplace."

The seminar will provide a framework for understanding the workings of China's economy, culture and business climate. It will cover cultural values, attitudes and beliefs; intellectual property rights; China's manufacturing environment; and market entry and successful business. The seminar will start at 8 a.m. on March 21. More information is available in the PDF file at
