Miracle-Ear Celebrates Better Hearing and Speech Month With Kindle Giveaway

Hearing Solutions Provider Hopes to Focus Public Attention on Risk Factors Associated With Untreated Hearing Loss

PLYMOUTH, MN--(Marketwire - Apr 23, 2012) - Miracle-Ear® hearing aid centers nationwide will give away a Kindle® Fire -- at no charge -- with all qualifying Miracle-Ear hearing aid* purchases during the month of May. The promotion is designed to coincide with Better Hearing and Speech Month, an annual awareness campaign sponsored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and to encourage people to visit their local Miracle-Ear store for a free hearing test.

The theme of this year's Better Hearing and Speech Month campaign is "Connecting People through Communication," according to Wendy Crespo, audiologist for Miracle-Ear. "Communication is so natural to most of us that we may take it for granted," said Crespo. "But communication between people requires a speaker and a listener. As the ability to be a 'listener' erodes over time for people with hearing loss, communication may break down, leading to isolation. Recent research has shown that this can have far-reaching effects."

Study results released recently by Johns Hopkins Medicine and the National Institute on Aging showed that a participant's risk of later developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease was related to his or her degree of hearing loss. The exact nature of this link is not yet fully understood. Researchers conjecture that it may be because individuals with hearing loss tend to withdraw from social situations and other cognitively-rich environments or it may have to do with making the brain work harder to decode poorly-heard information. Whatever the reason, the study's scientists suggest that their findings offer a "starting point for interventions" -- including hearing aids -- to help keep the lines of communications and interaction open for the hearing impaired.

One message is clear from the Johns Hopkins' study: the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss before the affected individual begins to withdraw. "While hearing loss, like dementia and Alzheimer's disease, is associated with aging, more than half of the 36 million Americans affected by the condition are under the age of 65," said Crespo. "These are the individuals who stand to benefit the most from early hearing loss diagnosis and treatment under the findings of this study."

Recognizing the real-world concerns that can make the idea of wearing a hearing aid difficult for some, Miracle-Ear continues to focus on advances in hearing aid design to help improve wear-ability, comfort and user acceptance. Miracle-Ear offers hearing aids that are smaller and less noticeable than ever before. Their full line of hearing aid accessories interfaces with today's most popular entertainment and communication devices to provide users with a complete and discreet hearing aid solution.

"We hope that our Kindle Fire offer will encourage everyone to discover if they could benefit from a hearing aid by coming in for a free hearing test during May," adds Crespo. "Miracle-Ear hearing aids and accessories can help keep the lines of communication open for individuals with hearing loss, helping them stay connected to other people and the world around them."
