Mirth Selected to Power Crescent City Beacon Community

Initiative Will Connect Healthcare Providers and Organizations Across Greater New Orleans Area

IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 16, 2011) - Mirth Corporation, a global leader in commercial open source healthcare information technology, announced that the Crescent City Beacon Community (CBCC), one of 17 federally funded Beacon Communities nationwide, will utilize their full suite of interoperability and care management solutions to achieve its innovative vision for connected care across the greater New Orleans area.

The Beacon Community Program, funded through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, provides major grants to communities enabling stronger health information technology (HIT) infrastructures, promoting meaningful use of HIT, and accelerating progress toward a safer, more connected, efficient and effective healthcare system. CCBC will implement Mirth's integrated suite of hosted tools and technologies to power the flow of patient information between healthcare providers across the community and to achieve its goals of improving control of cardiovascular disease and diabetes while reducing racial health disparities.

Mirth's solutions will create a shared HIT infrastructure that will facilitate care coordination and chronic disease management for enhancing information and process linkages across health systems and improving quality of care at the population level in measurable ways.

"We selected Mirth after a thorough panel review by the CCBC partners of the technology platforms and vendors specializing in connecting disparate health information systems," said Gaurav Nagrath, Chief Information Officer for the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) and the Health IT Lead for CCBC. "Their broad, flexible and integrated solution covers the gamut from multi-system interoperability support and secure hosting, to broadly accessible Direct Project protocol based secure e-mail, and a comprehensive care management platform that has been tested in large scale implementations. We expect to have our first elements live within 90 days, a challenging timeframe for projects of this size and complexity."

As part of the implementation, Mirth will integrate data from Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems already in use across the greater New Orleans community, including four of the top five ambulatory EHR systems in the market today. Medical practices not yet using an EHR system will still be able to participate by accessing the Mirth Results portal solution, or by using Mirth Mail to securely send or receive patient information.

"The Mirth team has been working for over a decade on improving health and healthcare by applying smartly designed solutions to power population-based care management and community-wide connectivity," said Jon Teichrow, co-founder and president of Mirth Corporation. "The Crescent City Beacon Community project brings the full suite of Mirth capabilities to the forefront -- from the bottom to the top of the stack. We're honored to be serving such a forward-thinking client and play a part in improving healthcare across New Orleans. This is a high quality demonstration of what's possible for communities across the U.S."

Mirth Results, a clinical data repository, and its companion Mirth Match, a master patient index, streamlines transition of care and referral processes between physicians and care facilities. It saves money by reducing redundant and costly medical tests performed when prior results are inaccessible. Additionally, it enables emergency physicians to access needed patient information when time is of the essence.

Mirth Mail -- utilizing the Direct Project protocol, developed with the support of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, supplies fully secured message transport between health care providers that can be conveniently accessed from the provider's existing email system.

Mirth Care, a comprehensive and connected platform for distributed care management, will enable CCBC to implement community-based care management initiatives that connect physicians and other healthcare providers with each other and with patients as they work together to improve care plan adherence for those with diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease.

Mirth Analytics will serve as the program's engine to streamline process and outcomes reporting.
