One year anniversary of Mariam Makhniashvili's disappearance prompts renewed efforts

This Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 will mark one year since the suspicious disappearance of Toronto teen Mariam Makhniashvili. In an ongoing effort to encourage the public to come forward with information, the Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) will be targeting the Greater Toronto area next week in conjunction with the anniversary of Mariam's disappearance. MCSC will be conducting a targeted poster campaign in Toronto, offering confidential communications to their 24-hour toll-free tip line and a new reward of $10,000 for any information leading to Mariam's whereabouts.

"Someone knows what happened to Mariam. We are offering them an opportunity to help this family, and to collect a sizeable reward in return," said Dan Picken, MCSC Investigator and former police detective.

On the morning of September 14th, 2009, Mariam walked with her younger brother George to school at the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute. When they arrived at the school, the pair went their separate ways - George headed towards the back entrance and Mariam walked around to use the front entrance. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary on that morning, but it would be the last time George would see his older sister.

Mariam was new to the Toronto area, having moved to the city just a few months before in June 2009. She had only been a student at her high school for a few days, since the start of the new school year that September. Mariam's parents have said that her disappearance was completely out of character for the girl, whom they described as quiet and shy.

As the one year anniversary approaches, Mariam's family still hasn't given up on looking for her.

"It has been one year now that our precious daughter disappeared. We still don't know where she is, or if she is alive," said Mariam's parents, Vakhtang Makhniahsvili and Lela Tabidze. "The pain of not knowing the whereabouts of our child is unbearable."

"Please, if you have any information, come forward, don't let our family suffer this way any longer," Mariam's parents continued, "By providing us, the police, or the Missing Children Society of Canada - with even small, new information - you could save our daughter's life or ease the tragedy of our family by helping us to learn that Mariam is not suffering anymore."

MCSC is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the active search for abducted and missing children. Anyone with information about Mariam's disappearance is asked to contact MCSC confidentially at 1-800-661-6160 toll-free or tips@mcsc.ca, or the Toronto Police Service at (416) 808-5300. MCSC Investigator Dan Picken can be reached directly at 403-291-0705 ext. 229 or MCSC Director of Investigations Maria Sbert can be reached at 403-291-0705 ext. 234.
