Mississippi Manufacturers' Guide Reports State Industrial Jobs Down 2.7%

EVANSTON, IL--(Marketwire - April 15, 2008) - Industrial employment in Mississippi dropped 2.7% over the past 12 months according to the 2008 Mississippi Manufacturers Register, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. The Mississippi industrial guide reports the state lost 5,586 industrial jobs and 125 manufacturers from March 2007 to March 2008 -- a greater loss than MNI reported for the state in the two years prior.

According to earlier MNI reports, Mississippi lost 1.8% of its manufacturing jobs between 2005 and 2006, and then lost another 2.5% between 2006 and 2007. Job losses were seen across the region with Tennessee down 4%, Arkansas down 2.8% and Alabama down 2% according to MNI.

"Even though manufacturing activity is at a record high, outsourcing, consolidation and increased technology have contributed to industrial employment declines across the nation," says Tom Dubin, President of Manufacturers' News, which has been surveying U.S. industry since 1912.

The manufacturers directory reports Mississippi is home to 3,504 manufacturers employing 199,292 workers. Mississippi ranks 34th in the nation for number of manufacturers and 32nd for jobs. MNI reports Mississippi is home to a greater number of large companies, with 13% of the state's manufacturers employing 100 or more workers, compared to the national average of 9.7%.

According to MNI, Mississippi's losses were spread evenly throughout the state with Southwest Mississippi down 2.3% or 1,705 jobs and is currently home to 63,921 workers. Northeast Mississippi accounts for 58,155 jobs, down 3% or 1,769, while Southwest Mississippi accounts for 44,842, down 1,335 or 2.9% over the year. Northwest Mississippi represents 32,412 of the state's jobs, down 779 or 2.3%.

MNI's city data shows Pascagoula ranks 1st in Mississippi for industrial employment, accounting for 14,024 jobs and 42 manufacturers, with no significant change reported over the year. Laurel accounts for 8,191 manufacturing jobs, with no significant change reported over the year, and is home to 87 plants Jackson manufacturers account for 261 of the state's companies and 7,915 jobs, with jobs down 6.8% over the year. Tupelo accounts for to 7,013 jobs and 115 plants, with employment down 7.3%. Meridian represents 5,724 of the state's jobs, down 1.7%, and accounts for 81 manufacturers.

Manufacturers' News reports food products manufacturing is the state's leading sector, with 24,846 industrial jobs, or 12% of the state's manufacturing employment, down 1.1% or 286 jobs over the past 12 months. Manufacturers of transportation equipment employ 23,936 Mississippi workers, down 558 or 2.3% over the past 12 months. Losses include cuts at a Great Dane Trailers Greenville plant and the closure of a Remy Reman plant in Raleigh. The industrial equipment and machinery sector ranks 3rd in the state with 22,010 jobs, and is up 495 jobs or 2.4% over the year.

Other sectors losing employment include printing and publishing, down 5.2%; lumber and wood, down 4%, textiles/apparel, down 9.6%, and metal fabricating, down 5.9%. Furniture and fixtures were down 5.2%, due partially to closures at Brookwood Furniture in Pontotoc and Iuka's Bauhaus USA plant, with these losses offset somewhat by Ashley Furniture's expansion of its Ecru facility. Electronics manufacturing was down 7% after Oreck Corp. shut down its Long Beach plant.

Employment gains were seen in rubber and miscellaneous plastics, up 3.5%, primary metals, up 10% and paper/allied products, up 4.1%.
