Missouri Baptist Medical Center -- Only Area Hospital to Hold NICHE Certification in Geriatric Care

ST. LOUIS, MO--(Marketwire - Nov 30, 2011) - As people live longer, there is an increasing need to better understand what is necessary to provide the best care for the elderly, and Missouri Baptist Medical Center is at the forefront of providing these patients with specialized care.

Missouri Baptist is the only hospital in the St. Louis region to receive certification as a Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) hospital that specializes in geriatric care. The hospital also is one of only four hospitals in Missouri to be designated as a NICHE hospital.

The NICHE designation complements the medical center's existing Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit located with the neurology and renal units. The ACE unit, which recently expanded from 12 to 24 beds, offers specially trained staff in geriatric care and a safe and caring environment designed around the special needs of elderly patients.

The NICHE program was created by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing.

"We are a leader in innovative and effective care for the elderly," said Tim Mislan, vice president and chief nurse executive, Missouri Baptist. "The hospital is focused on developing an optimal environment for our elderly patients, maintaining a clinical staff of the best and brightest in geriatric care, and implementing thorough processes for providing efficient and effective treatment."

Robin Edelman, ACE unit adult clinical nurse practitioner and member of the NICHE team, Missouri Baptist, explained, "We want the patients who come here to be able to return to their homes rather than going to a nursing home."

Edelman is one of five NICHE leadership team members at the medical center who participated in an intensive, six-week program that led to the designation for Missouri Baptist. Other NICHE members included Ellen Binder, MD, associate professor of geriatrics at Washington University in St. Louis and physician consultant to the NICHE leadership committee; Missouri Baptist's Yoany Finetti, RN, MSN, director of acute and critical care; Joan Amend, RN, manager of 5 neuro/renal dialysis; Heidi Schmittgens, MSN, RN, clinical education specialist.

"Missouri Baptist is at the forefront of geriatric care," Edelman says. "NICHE provides a tremendous amount of resources to enhance our knowledge and skills in the treatment of older adult patients and offers best practices in the care of geriatric patients from across the country."
