MKS Drives Productivity and Transparency for Visual Studio Development

MKS Integrity brings enterprise-class unified ALM to the Visual Studio IDE

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 30, 2009) - MKS Inc. (MKS) (TSX:MKX), the global leader in unified application lifecycle management (ALM) technology, today announced the availability of advanced integration extending MKS Integrity™ into the Microsoft Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE). This integration enables organizations with heterogeneous development environments to bring teams working in the Visual Studio IDE the collaboration, productivity and traceability advantages offered by unified ALM.

Velocity, compliance and risk mitigation

"This integration brings Microsoft development teams into the enterprise class of ALM," says Colin Doyle, Product Manager at MKS. "Teams using the Visual Studio IDE can now move beyond basic version control and other 'low level' integrations and start leveraging the power of a unified ALM solution. MKS goes beyond most other integrated solutions by using the Visual Studio Software Development Kit (as opposed to the Source Code Control Interface (MSSCCI)), which results in a deeper level of integration and more functionality exposed within the IDE. In practical terms, this can mean automation of common tasks so that developers can spend their time on actual development rather than on trying to manage and adhere to policies in a separate configuration management system. Ultimately, all of this integration and automation translates into more rapid development cycles, improved compliance and mitigation of the risks associated with errors and rework."

Conflict avoidance rather than conflict resolution

MKS Integrity enables developers in the Visual Studio IDE to practice 'safe development' by deciphering developer activity within the IDE and automatically performing the appropriate ALM operations (for instance, files under source control are automatically locked when a user starts editing the file). With full support for MKS Integrity non-exclusive locks, the development team can see in-progress change, without blocking others from working on the same solution. MKS Integrity change package support provides superior task-oriented change management abilities within Visual Studio. The net result is that developers can proactively identify and avoid potential conflicts rather than spending time and effort to resolve conflicts.

Getting it done, faster, better and with less cost and effort

Task-oriented Work-In-Progress and tightly integrated task management views help accelerate development by streamlining workflow. Users can easily find their assigned tasks, view or edit tasks, and create new tasks. MKS Integrity provides improved support for refactoring operations performed within Visual Studio (moves and renames are recorded as such, rather than as adds and drops), which helps enhance code quality without sacrificing transparency.

Transforming Solutions into Reusable IP

MKS creates a framework for the re-use of solutions in the IDE with flexible support for solution binding (putting Visual Studio solutions under source control). An intuitive solution-sharing wizard connected to a solution registry maintained on the MKS Integrity server allows users to query the MKS Integrity server for appropriate solutions and then easily import them. Parallel development of solutions is supported with intuitive gestures to branch solutions and to select solutions for import by branch; the same mechanism also fully supports component re-use (projects that were put under source control as part of one solution can be shared into other solutions). When developers leverage this solution registry it unlocks the value inherent in these solutions as intellectual property; re-use of established solutions helps accelerate development cycles by eliminating errors and duplication of effort.

Equality across development environments

"This new integration means that development teams using the Visual Studio IDE can achieve the same efficiencies as other teams across an enterprise with heterogeneous development environments," continues Doyle. "Bringing Visual Studio development teams under management with MKS Integrity can translate into greater efficiency, clarity and transparency across the development organization (as well as infrastructure cost savings realized through the consolidation of ALM on a single platform)."

This new Visual Studio integration is available today as part of MKS Integrity, and supports all versions of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 (except Express).
