"MMHA Celebrates Hockey!" Promotes Participation in Minor Hockey

MARKHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 2, 2011) - The Markham Minor Hockey Association announced today MMHA Celebrates Hockey!, a community event designed to promote participation in minor hockey programs in Markham.

To be held on August 19th and 20th, 2011 at the Markham Village Community Centre, the festival of hockey will include multiple activities which include appearances from current NHL players, a road hockey tournament, equipment swap, demonstrations on equipment fitting, Floorball workshops and demonstrations, live music and a BBQ.

MMHA Celebrates Hockey! is an element of the association's Yes, You Can Play! program, an outreach program designed to make their house league hockey program accessible to a broader spectrum of Markham youth.

"We thought it important to provide an opportunity to those families that may be considering participating in our House League program to learn more about the sport and the positive culture we are trying to promote" said Darren Mori, Vice President of the MMHA House League program." The equipment swap also provides an opportunity for gently-used equipment to be passed to other families at nominal cost, thus reducing the financial barriers to participation. It's a win-win".

In what is sure to be a highlight of the event, former Waxers alumni Michael Del Zotto, Brendan Gaunce, Cameron Gaunce, Cody Hodgson, and Steven Stamkos will be in attendance on Friday (August 19th) evening to participate in a Floorball demonstration beginning at 6:30 pm.

Donations of gently-used equipment can be dropped off at Markham Village Community Centre ( on Friday, August 19 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. These items will be made available for sale at reasonable prices (most items under $20) the following day.

The majority of the activities will take place on Saturday August 20th between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. The road hockey tournament will be running throughout the day with teams organized by age group. The tournament is open to all players from Mites to Juvenile regardless of skill level. Details of the activities and registration for the road hockey tournament can be found on the event's website:
