Renowned Industry Professionals to Provide Thought Leadership, Technical Expertise and Oversight to $2.25 Million Global Competition With 33 Registered Teams From 8 Countries

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 24, 2013) -  XPRIZE and Nokia are pleased to announce the Judging Panel and Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) for the first competition in the $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE, a fixed-date series of two separate and consecutive competitions over two years to develop sensing technologies that capture meaningful information about a consumer's state of health and surrounding environment.

The Judging Panel is comprised of nine thought leaders and industry experts who have cross-functional and relevant expertise in sensors, sensing and mobile health technologies. Judges will be tasked with reviewing team submissions made during the Judging Phase and selecting the most credible entries in the areas of accuracy and consistency, demonstration quality, technical innovation, human factors, market opportunity, originality and user experience.

The Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE Judging Panel consists of:

  • Eric Van Gieson, Chief of the Diagnostics, Disease Surveillance, and Threat Detection Division within the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)
  • Michael Gillam, MD, FACEP, Former Director of Healthcare Innovation for the Microsoft Health Solutions Group and founded and led the Microsoft Healthcare Innovation Lab
  • Nate Heintzman, Assistant Professor, Division of Biomedical Informatics, UCSD
  • Corinna Lathan, Founder and CEO of AnthroTronix
  • Toni Marechaux, Senior Scientist, Strategic Analysis, Inc.

"We are very pleased with the caliber of individuals on the Judging Panel and Scientific Advisory Board members, and the diverse skill sets they bring to the Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE," said Mark Winter, Senior Director, Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE. "The goal of this competition is to stimulate the development of a wide array of new sensors that will help to enable the mobile health industry. Our Judging and Scientific Advisory Board members operate at the forefront of the mobile health revolution and fully understand the significance of biosensors and sensing to the future of personalized healthcare."

The SAB includes three industry leaders who are highly regarded in their respective fields of expertise including precision medicine, biomedical informatics, sensors and sensing technologies, mass storage solutions, nanotechnologies, and health and wellness applications. In addition to establishing qualifications for the Judging Panel and approving their appointment, the SAB also advised XPRIZE and Nokia on the development of the judging criteria and final competition guidelines and will continue to provide expert input and oversight on the management and operations of the competition.

Members of the SAB include:

  • Daniel Kraft, MD, Executive Director, FutureMed, Medicine Track Chair, Singularity University, Founder & CEO, IntelliMedicine, Inventor of the MarrowMiner
  • Tapani Ryhänen, Director, Head of Sensor and Material Technologies Laboratory, Nokia
  • Roni Zeiger, MD, Co-Founder and CEO of Impatient Science

"We have some of the top influencers and thought leaders across multiple industries serving as members of the Judging Panel and Scientific Advisory Board," said Henry Tirri, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Nokia. "Their collective minds will ultimately determine the winner of the competition based not only on a team's objective performance, but also the impact and viability of their technology as determined by the Judging Panel. As such, it was critical to appoint judges and SAB members who have cross-functional backgrounds and relevant expertise beyond just the field of health technology."

Registration for the first Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE officially closed on April 5, 2013, with 33 teams from eight countries competing for a prize purse that includes a $525,000 Grand Prize and up to five Distinguished Awards, each valued at $120,000. During the Qualifying Round, the next phase of the challenge, the Judging Panel will assess team submissions and narrow the field down to 10 finalists. The Final Round, which will take place in September 2013, will bring competitors and judges together, providing teams with the chance to present their sensing technology in a live setting. The winner of the first challenge will be announced at the conclusion of the Final Round judging phase in early October 2013.
